If you’re wondering when to book a newborn photo session, the answer is pretty simple. If you’re due between September and December, the time is now.
As a newborn photographer, I see it every year. The final months of the year are by far the busiest, and for good reason. With spring blooms, warmer weather, and the emotional pull of the holidays approaching, it’s a season when families are thinking about memories, milestones, and preserving it all before the year comes to a close.
Why the End of the Year Books Out Quickly
That’s a great question, and I’ll tell you why my availability fills fast from September through December:
- Oh baby, It’s baby boom season! The most popular birth months in Australia are September and early October, since I’m nosy I did some conception maths and let’s just say theres a lot of love going around in December and January… but I digress, this means I receive more newborn enquiries than any other time of year.
- What better gift? With Christmas just around the corner, many families book sessions to create heartfelt gifts for grandparents or to update their family portraits.
- The weather is beautiful. Spring and early summer are ideal for maternity sessions and golden-hour family shoots, which means my calendar fills with more than just newborns.
- Many families want to wrap up the year with photos. Whether it’s to mark a first Christmas, a baby’s first birthday, or a long-awaited maternity moment, this season always brings a wave of emotion and a desire to pause time for just a day.
When Should You Book Your Newborn Session?
Okay okay, you’ve heard me banging on lately about when to book a newborn photo session and booking in early, but what does that actually mean? Ideally, you’ll want to book your session during the second trimester or as soon as you know you’d love one. I pencil in your due date and only take a limited number of babies each month to ensure every family receives a calm and personalised experience.
That means if your baby is due anytime between now and the end of 2025, it’s worth reaching out now to secure your place.
What If Baby Arrives Early or Late?
No need to worry my dear friend, I always allow flexibility in my schedule for early or late arrivals. It’s why I only book in a certain number of sessions each month. Once you’re booked in, I simply ask that you get in touch once baby is born, and we’ll lock in a date that falls within the ideal window for newborn photos. This is usually when baby is between 5 and 14 days old, though I’ve photographed many beautiful sessions outside that range too.
