The Best Age for a Newborn Photoshoot (And Why It Matters)

Newborn Photography

Those tiny fingers, that flaky skin, the way they curl up like they’re still in the womb! There’s a very small window where your baby is brand new and everything feels like a beautiful blur. As a Sydney newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I’m asked is:

“What’s the best age for newborn photography?”

And I get it, between sleepless nights, feeding schedules, and adjusting to this brand new love in your arms, booking a photoshoot might feel like a lot. But trust me when I say this: there’s a sweet spot that gives us those dreamy, sleepy, squishy images everyone falls in love with.

Let’s talk about that window and why it matters.

The Ideal Time for Newborn Photography

The best age for newborn photography is between 5 and 14 days old.

Why? Because during this time, your baby is usually:

  • Sleepier for longer stretches (which means they’re easier to pose)
  • Still has that curled-up womb position
  • Less prone to baby acne or gassy discomfort
  • More likely to stay calm with simple soothing techniques

Of course, every baby is different. Some little ones are ready earlier, others need a bit more time. That’s why I always keep things flexible and baby-led: no stress, no pressure. Just gentle guidance and a calm space for you and your new bundle.

What If My Baby Is Older Than 2 Weeks?

Don’t panic — I’ve photographed babies up to and above 6 weeks old and captured some absolute magic. We may not get all the sleepy, curled-up poses, but we can still document beautiful expressions, stretches, and connection with mum, dad, and siblings.

So if you feel like you’ve “missed the window,” know this: it’s never too late to capture this season. We just tailor the session to suit your baby, exactly as they are. Click here to see a session with an older bub!

When Should I Book a Newborn Photography Session?

If you’re pregnant now, the best time to book your newborn photography session is around the 20–30 week mark. That way, I can pencil in your due date and keep my calendar flexible. Once bub arrives, we lock in the final date.

I only take a limited number of sessions each month to make sure I can offer this flexibility, so if you’re thinking about it, get in touch sooner rather than later.

Why This Time Matters So Much

There are things only a newborn does: that slow yawn, the way their fingers wrap around yours, the milk-drunk smiles, the newborn scrunch. These moments pass in the blink of an eye.

As a Sydney newborn photographer, my job isn’t just to take beautiful images. It’s to freeze time. To give you something real, tangible, and full of love so when the fog lifts and your baby isn’t quite so new anymore, you’ll have more than just memories.

You’ll have proof.

Of how small they were.
How deeply you loved.
How wildly your world changed.
